Sprain

Sprain manifests as a stretch or rupture of ligaments. Sprains can occur in any joint, but they are most common in the ankle and knee.

Sprain can occur as a result of a sudden twist, which has the effect of stretching or rupture of the ligaments. Signs and symptoms of a sprain may include pain, swelling, bruising, and limited ability to move the affected joint.

The severity of the sprain varies from a minor injury, which can be treated in a few days at home with rest and ice, to a significant rupture of one or several ligaments, which requires surgery to repair the affected ligaments and a period of immobilization.

An equivalent injury to a muscle or tendon is known as a stretch.
