Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body.

Vitamin B12 is a cofactor in DNA synthesis, and in both fatty acid and amino acid metabolism. It is particularly important in the normal functioning of the nervous system via its role in the synthesis of myelin and in the development of red blood cells in the bone marrow. Vitamin B12 is also important for brain development and function.

Vitamin B12 deficiency often leads to anemia, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite and weight loss. Neurological changes, such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, may also occur.

Food sources rich in Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal products, such as dairy products, eggs, fish, meat, and poultry.

Beef is also a source of vitamin B12. Lamb liver and kidneys are especially rich in vitamin B12.

Shells and tuna also contain very high concentrations of vitamin B12.
