Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is part of the vitamin B group of essential nutrients. It is available in three forms pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine which can be interconverted in biological systems. Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin involved in various enzymatic reactions, glucose metabolism, amino acid metabolism, fatty acids and hemoglobin formation.

Vitamin B6 is significant to the creation of red blood cells, serotonin and norepinephrine (noradrenaline), two neurotransmitters, and also to the formation of myelin, a lipoprotein coating that forms the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath wraps around the nerve cells and insulate the axon from electrical activity allowing electrical impulses to be transmitted quickly along the nerve cells.

Vitamin B6 is involved in maintaining the health of the lymph nodes, thymus and spleen. It is also known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
